Former Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi Gravely Wounded in Tehran Attack
Apparent Assassination Attempt Kills Wife
Tehran, Iran
Former Iranian foreign minister Kamal Kharazi sustained serious injuries in what appears to be an assassination attempt on his home, which also killed his wife, local media reported Thursday. The incident comes amid ongoing U.S. and Israeli airstrikes targeting Iran for the fifth consecutive week.
Iranian newspapers Shargh, Etemad, and Ham Mihan reported that Kharazi was hospitalized with severe wounds following the attack on his residence.
Al Jazeera’s Mohamed Vall, reporting from Tehran, said, “We have seen what looks like an assassination attempt against the former foreign minister, Kamal Kharazi … We don’t know why he’s been targeted. He has been gravely wounded, and his wife was killed.”
Widespread Strikes Across Iran
Airstrikes hit multiple Iranian cities on Thursday, including Tehran, Isfahan, and Shiraz. In Larestan, southern Iran, four fatalities were reported. The Pasteur Institute of Iran, a medical research center founded in 1920, suffered severe damage, according to the Health Ministry.
Health Ministry spokesperson Hossein Kermanpour condemned the strike on X (formerly Twitter), calling it a “direct assault on international health security” and describing the institute as a “century-old pillar of global health.”
Iran Pledges Continued Military Action
The spokesperson for Iran’s armed forces’ unified command stated that Tehran will continue its military campaign in the Middle East until the U.S. and Israel face “permanent regret and surrender,” according to the semi-official Tasnim news agency.
Ebrahim Zolfaghari, spokesperson of the Khatam al-Anbiya central headquarters, warned that U.S. and Israeli assessments of Iran’s military capabilities were “incomplete” and pledged “more crushing, broader, and more destructive” attacks against adversaries.
