GARY, IN — A new chapter in Gary’s revitalization journey officially began today as city leaders and community partners broke ground on the highly anticipated Tolleston Opportunity Campus—a $30 million, state-of-the-art community hub poised to serve thousands across Northwest Indiana.
In a powerful show of unity and hope, stakeholders gathered to mark the ceremonial start of construction, where the Dean and Barbara White Family Foundation announced an additional $5 million commitment—raising their total investment to $15 million.
“This is more than a construction project—it’s a testament to Gary’s resilience and the belief in its people,” said Mayor Eddie Melton. “By investing in spaces that bring us together, we’re laying the groundwork for a stronger, brighter future.”
The Tolleston Opportunity Campus is being developed through a landmark partnership involving the City of Gary, Crossroads YMCA, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Northwest Indiana, and Methodist Hospitals. Together, they’re building an all-in-one community center designed to empower youth, promote wellness, and foster lasting connections.
Funded through a blend of public and private contributions—including a $10 million READI grant, $10 million from the White Foundation, and $10 million from the City of Gary—the project exemplifies what collaborative impact looks like.
Congressman Frank Mrvan praised the initiative as a turning point for the region: “This dedicated space for children and families will strengthen community ties and open doors for generations to come.”
William Hanna, Executive Director of the White Foundation, underscored their mission: “This is exactly the kind of transformative, long-lasting investment we strive for—bringing exceptional partners together to meet real needs in a sustainable way.”
The new campus will feature modern classrooms, a multi-purpose gym, a wellness center, a child development hub, a teaching kitchen, and expansive indoor and outdoor recreation areas—all on the site of three recently demolished buildings.
Jay Buckmaster, President/CEO of Crossroads YMCA, called it a “once-in-a-generation opportunity,” adding, “This will be a safe, welcoming space for all to grow, learn, and thrive.”
Matt Doyle, President and CEO of Methodist Hospitals, highlighted the health benefits: “We see this becoming a central wellness hub—connecting residents to critical resources while encouraging healthy lifestyles.”
Mike Jessen of the Boys & Girls Clubs emphasized their continued commitment: “This isn’t just a building—it’s a promise to the youth of Gary. A place where they can build confidence, skills, and a path to a successful life.”
With construction now underway, the Tolleston Opportunity Campus is expected to open its doors in 2026. The facility is projected to serve thousands annually, delivering integrated support and opportunity to every corner of the community.
