Emil Michael, Under Secretary of War for Research and Engineering, stressed the urgency of this effort. He stated that the United States cannot afford to fall behind in global AI competition, calling AI “America’s next frontier” and an essential requirement for national defense.

The development of GenAI.mil reflects the work of the War Department’s AI Rapid Capabilities Cell, which leads the Department’s technological transformation. Their efforts support the broader goals of rebuilding military strength, restoring deterrence, and reinforcing the warrior ethos.
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth emphasized that embedding AI into daily operations will open new possibilities for efficiency and modernization. He noted that the Department is “all in” on artificial intelligence and committed to using America’s commercial innovation to reshape military capabilities.
Training and Security Measures
To support widespread adoption, the Department is offering free training for all GenAI.mil users. These sessions aim to help personnel build confidence and understand how to use AI tools effectively. All systems on the platform meet strict security standards, including certification for Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and Impact Level 5 (IL5), ensuring safe operational use.
Gemini for Government enhances reliability by integrating natural language processing, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and Google Search grounding to reduce misinformation and improve accuracy.
