Lavrov Al Thani Push Diplomatic Solution Gulf Tensions

Sergey Lavrov and Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al Thani held a phone conversation to address escalating tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing the urgency of a peaceful resolution.

According to Russia’s Foreign Ministry, both sides agreed that military approaches must be avoided, urging all stakeholders to pursue dialogue aimed at achieving a durable and balanced settlement. They underscored the importance of safeguarding the security interests of Gulf nations while ensuring uninterrupted maritime navigation through the vital passage.

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that discussions also covered bilateral ties and regional developments, including the fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran. Both officials highlighted ongoing diplomatic efforts to ease tensions and reinforce regional stability.

The two leaders stressed that meaningful engagement with mediation initiatives is essential to tackling the underlying causes of the crisis. They called for constructive dialogue to prevent further escalation and secure a long-term agreement.

Tensions in the region intensified after US and Israeli strikes on Iran in late February triggered retaliatory actions from Tehran, disrupting shipping activities in the Strait. A ceasefire brokered in early April through Pakistani mediation temporarily reduced hostilities, although talks in Islamabad failed to produce a permanent resolution.

The situation remains volatile, with the United States imposing a naval blockade on Iranian maritime operations in the strategic corridor since mid-April, raising concerns over global energy security and regional stability.
