A new UN report has raised alarming concerns about the growing global social crisis, highlighting widespread insecurity, inequality, and distrust. The 2025 World Social Report reveals that billions of people are living in fear of job loss, struggling with unstable employment, or facing the harsh realities of informal sector work.
Economic instability, conflicts, and climate shocks are driving this crisis, eroding global security and trust in the future. Despite advances in education, health, and connectivity, many individuals feel that life today is worse than it was half a century ago. Nearly 60% of those surveyed reported struggling with life satisfaction, while 12% described themselves as suffering.
The report reveals that economic instability is no longer confined to low-income regions; even high-income countries are grappling with rising job uncertainty, gig work, and the digital transition. These jobs offer flexibility but often lack security and rights, reducing workers to commodified service providers.
In many low and middle-income countries, informal employment remains the norm, locking workers into cycles of low pay and instability, with no safety net. Even those in formal employment face significant risks of falling back into the informal sector, especially during economic downturns.
