Havana Oil Refinery Blaze Adds to Fuel Crisis

Cuba Battles Fuel Shortage After Refinery Incident

Cuban Refinery Fire Contained as Fuel Shortage Deepens

Blaze at Ñico López Facility Brought Under Control

A fire broke out Friday at the Ñico López Refinery in Havana; however, emergency crews quickly brought the situation under control, according to Cuba’s Energy Ministry. Thick black smoke rose above the facility for a short time, drawing attention from nearby residents.

Officials confirmed that firefighters confined the blaze to a warehouse storing unused materials. Importantly, the flames did not spread to fuel storage tanks or critical production units. As a result, refinery operations continued without interruption. Authorities also reported no injuries.

An investigation is now underway to determine the cause of the fire.

Incident Occurs Amid Growing Fuel Crisis

The refinery incident comes as Cuba faces a worsening fuel shortage. In recent months, oil supplies from Venezuela have sharply declined after the United States cut off shipments from its longtime ally. Those deliveries previously accounted for tens of thousands of barrels of oil per day.

Following a US operation that captured former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and led to the seizure of several oil tankers, key fuel transfers to Cuba effectively stopped. Consequently, the island has struggled to maintain stable fuel supplies.

Broader Economic Impact

As fuel reserves shrink, Cuba has experienced mounting pressure across several sectors. Transportation services have faced disruptions, while electricity production has become increasingly difficult. Authorities have implemented rationing measures in an effort to manage limited resources.

Although the refinery fire did not further disrupt production, it highlights the fragile state of the country’s energy infrastructure during a period of economic strain.

For now, officials emphasize that refinery operations remain stable and that the fire has not worsened the existing shortage.
