President Herzog to World Jewish Congress: “We Will Always Lead With Our Humanity”

Israeli President Isaac Herzog addressed the 17th Plenary Assembly of the World Jewish Congress on Monday, emphasizing the importance of unity, compassion, and resilience amid ongoing national and global challenges.
Speaking to Jewish leaders from around the world gathered in Jerusalem, Herzog acknowledged the deep pain experienced by the Israeli people since the October 7 attacks. “My wife Michal and I have personally met with more than 1,100 bereaved families, hundreds of wounded civilians and soldiers, and countless evacuees,” he said.
Herzog also reiterated his commitment to securing the release of Israeli hostages. “We are in constant contact with their families and continue to fight for the return of every single one,” he stated.
Referencing his recent meeting with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican, Herzog wore a sticker with the number 590, symbolizing the emotional toll of the conflict and the number of hostages yet to return. “We need them home now,” he urged.
President Herzog praised the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) for their continued efforts and welcomed the government’s decision to resume the transfer of humanitarian aid. “This is essential for preserving basic human conditions, upholding international law, and—most importantly—maintaining our humanity,” he said.
In a strong condemnation of the attackers, Herzog described them as a “cruel, sinister enemy,” but emphasized, “We will not allow them to strip us of our values. We will always lead with our humanity.”
