India’s winter parliament session ended in chaos on Friday, marked by heated arguments, accusations of violence, and stern criticism from the vice president for the “destructive disruptions.” The tensions peaked when police launched an investigation into Congress leader Rahul Gandhi after two BJP lawmakers claimed they were injured during protests outside parliament. These incidents resulted in hospitalizations, with the BJP accusing Congress of orchestrating the chaos, while Congress countered with its own complaint, alleging that opposition leader Mallikarjun Kharge was also harmed during the protests.
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar reprimanded the lawmakers, urging them to choose between constructive debate and continued disruptions, which he said were damaging public trust in democracy. The unrest stemmed from a heated dispute over allegations that Home Minister Amit Shah had insulted Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, India’s iconic leader and champion of the Dalit community. Shah and the ruling BJP dismissed the accusations as baseless, accusing the opposition of spreading malicious lies.
