Iran Reports US Strike on Hengam Island

US Allegedly Targets Hengam Island Near Strait of Hormuz

ISTANBUL — Iranian state-affiliated media reported on Wednesday that the United States carried out a strike on Hengam Island, located off Iran’s southern coast near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, as tensions between Washington and Tehran continue to escalate.

According to Mehr News Agency, US projectiles struck a site on Hengam Island, which lies south of Qeshm Island and close to one of the world’s busiest maritime trade routes.

The report did not provide details about casualties, injuries or the extent of the damage, and Iranian authorities have yet to release additional information regarding the incident.

The reported strike comes amid a sharp deterioration in relations between the United States and Iran, with both sides exchanging military attacks in recent days despite a Pakistan-mediated memorandum of understanding intended to reduce hostilities and pave the way for renewed diplomatic negotiations.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a vital global energy corridor, carrying a significant share of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas exports. Any military activity in the area has the potential to disrupt international shipping and increase volatility in global energy markets.

The United States has not immediately commented on the reported strike.
