Iran’s Supreme Leader Signals New Phase for Hormuz Strait While Reiterating Peace Stance

TEHRAN — Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, stated in a written message on Thursday that the country does not seek war with the United States or Israel but will defend its national rights. The message, aired on state television, coincided with the 40-day commemoration of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed on February 28, the first day of the ongoing conflict.

Commitment to National Rights

Khamenei emphasized, “We did not seek war and we do not want it. But we will not renounce our legitimate rights under any circumstances.” He highlighted the broader resistance front, likely referring to Hezbollah in Lebanon, Iran’s regional ally.

Strategic Moves in Hormuz

The leader announced that Iran will advance the management of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz into a new phase, signaling a more assertive stance in regional control while maintaining a defensive approach.

Ceasefire and Public Engagement

Iran recently agreed to a fragile two-week ceasefire with the United States, opening the possibility for peace negotiations after months of intense conflict. Khamenei urged Iranians to remain active in public demonstrations despite the ceasefire, stating, “Your voices in public squares are undoubtedly influential in the outcome of the negotiations.
