Islamic Bank Grants $10M to WHO

The Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) has committed $10 million to the World Health Organization (WHO) to support the Health Impact Investment Platform, according to a joint statement made during the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan. This platform aims to address healthcare and climate-related challenges in low- and middle-income countries.

Launched at COP29, this financing initiative is a partnership between multilateral development banks, including IsDB, and WHO. Its initial phase includes countries such as Burundi, Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Morocco, among others. The platform seeks to make around 10,000 health facilities fully operational, including with solar power, to strengthen climate resilience.

IsDB’s contribution is expected to help unlock at least $500 million in health investments, with a goal of raising $1.5 billion in concessional financing to support national health priorities. IsDB President Muhammad Al Jasser emphasized that the partnership would bolster universal health coverage and primary healthcare resilience in member countries, creating a foundation to address current and future health challenges.
