The World Health Organization (WHO) announced Monday that negotiations on a global pandemic treaty will extend into 2025, with a target to conclude by May of that year.
Anne-Claire Amprou, co-chair of the WHO’s Intergovernmental Negotiating Body (INB), stated that member states are committed to reaching an agreement as soon as possible, aiming for completion by the next World Health Assembly in May 2025. Amprou noted the progress in negotiations, driven by strong political commitment.
Co-chair Precious Matsoso highlighted that previous international agreements have taken significantly longer, adding, “We are obligated to do better and be more prepared for the next pandemic.” Matsoso expressed confidence that the treaty would enhance global readiness for both current and future health threats, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic, which has claimed approximately 7 million lives.
The INB, formed by the World Health Assembly in 2021, comprises 194 member states and is responsible for developing a treaty or similar international framework under the WHO Constitution to improve pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response. The INB is holding its 12th meeting this week in a hybrid format.
