Germany’s governing parties and the main opposition have agreed to hold early elections on February 23, 2025, as reported by local media. Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democratic Party (SPD), its coalition partner the Greens, and the opposition Christian Democrats (CDU/CSU) reached the agreement during talks in Berlin.
This decision comes after the collapse of Scholz’s left-liberal coalition government, triggered by disagreements with the liberal Free Democrats (FDP) over economic policies. While Scholz had considered a vote of confidence in January, which could have led to elections in March, the opposition pushed for elections by February.
The final election date will be determined by President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who is responsible for dissolving parliament and scheduling the elections.
