UN Warns on Ukraine’s Winter Energy

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) expressed concern on Tuesday over Ukraine’s energy generation capacity, which has been severely impacted by Russian attacks as winter approaches. According to Kelly Clements, the UN’s Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees, Russia’s destruction of energy infrastructure has resulted in a 65% loss of energy capacity in recent months, continuing to disrupt electricity, heating, and water supplies.

Clements highlighted the role of 450 local organizations in Ukraine, actively preparing for the winter. She also noted that, with the first snowfall already occurring, there are fears that energy infrastructure could face further catastrophic damage during the coldest months.

To assist, UNHCR is providing alternative heating, insulation, and other supplies to vulnerable populations, aiming to support 625,000 individuals facing difficult conditions. This comes as Russia’s war in Ukraine nears its 1,000th day.
