Israel to Appoint Permanent Director for Security Agency by June 15

Prime Minister Orders Immediate Naming of New Israeli Security Agency Chief

JERUSALEM — May 23, 2025 — The Prime Minister’s Office announced today that Israel will appoint a permanent director to lead the Israeli Security Agency (ISA) by June 15. Amid an ongoing multi-front conflict, the Prime Minister emphasized that a full-time director is essential to safeguard national security and protect Israeli soldiers.

The Prime Minister warned that leaving the ISA under interim leadership would weaken its effectiveness. “Any delay in naming a permanent director harms the state’s security,” the office statement said.

Under Israeli law, the nomination of Maj.-Gen. Zini will proceed in two stages:

  1. Integrity Review: The Grunis Committee on Senior Appointments will vet the candidate’s qualifications and integrity.

  2. Government Approval: Following the committee’s endorsement, the cabinet will formalize the appointment.

Current ISA Director Ronen Bar will step down on June 15. The Prime Minister’s Office assured that the handover will follow a clear, ordered timeline.

The statement also clarified that ongoing investigations into Qatar-related activities remain under the exclusive supervision of the Attorney General. “The incoming ISA director will have no involvement in these probes,” it added, aiming to quell speculation and preserve the integrity of those inquiries.
