Federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh participated in Winnipeg’s Labour Day rally and march at Memorial Park on Monday, as his party aims to maintain its stronghold in the upcoming Elmwood-Transcona byelection. Singh emphasized the importance of the labour movement, celebrating gains like the 40-hour workweek and workplace safety improvements.
The event, attended by hundreds, also marked the 130th anniversary of the Winnipeg Labour Council. CUPE Manitoba President Gina McKay highlighted the significance of Labour Day in recognizing workers’ achievements, with additional events held in Brandon and Thompson.
As the byelection nears on September 16, Singh’s presence underscores the NDP’s effort to retain the riding, which it has held for most of its 36-year history. The NDP candidate Leila Dance, backed by labour leaders, faces competition from Conservative Colin Reynolds, Liberal Ian MacIntyre, Green Party candidate Nicolas Geddert, People’s Party candidate Sarah Couture, and Zbig Strycharz of the Canadian Future Party.
Advance polling for the byelection begins on September 6.–News Desk
