Kazakh President: Astana Ready to Aid Global Solutions

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev reaffirmed on Friday his nation’s readiness to play a constructive role in addressing global challenges, while emphasizing Kazakhstan’s pragmatic approach to international affairs. “We don’t seek the title of mediator, but we stand ready to assist in resolving international issues within our means,” Tokayev told Ana Tili.

Reflecting on a conversation with US President-elect Donald Trump, Tokayev described their dialogue as “meaningful and candid.” Trump, he said, views Kazakhstan as a vital strategic partner, and the two leaders committed to maintaining high-level contact. Trump also sought Tokayev’s perspective on the Ukraine conflict. Tokayev characterized the war as a stalemate, where resolution depends on the will of Russian, Ukrainian, and Western leaders.

Since the conflict began in 2022, Kazakhstan has consistently called for peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, Tokayev noted.

Turning to regional ties, Tokayev highlighted ongoing efforts to deepen cooperation with China and Russia. He revealed discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese corporations about Kazakhstan’s first nuclear power plant, with global interest fueling potential bids. Tokayev hinted at the possibility of additional plants to address the nation’s energy shortage.

On the Azerbaijan Airlines crash near Aktau, Tokayev supported sending the black boxes to Brazil for investigation, citing the importance of impartiality.

From international diplomacy to domestic advancements, Tokayev’s vision underscores Kazakhstan’s evolving role on the global and regional stage.
