DHAKA: At least eight Rohingya refugees, including five children, lost their lives after heavy monsoon rains triggered multiple landslides in refugee camps in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar on Monday.
Authorities said continuous rainfall caused hillsides to collapse across several camps, where over one million Rohingya refugees live in overcrowded shelters vulnerable to natural disasters. Officials warned that additional heavy rain could increase the risk of further landslides in the coming days.
To minimize casualties, nearly 20,000 refugees have already been relocated from high-risk areas as part of emergency preparedness measures. Relief agencies, government authorities, and humanitarian organizations are working together to evacuate vulnerable families, while learning centers have been converted into temporary shelters for those displaced by the severe weather.
