Manitoba Premier Calls on Canada to Stop Iran War

Premier Urges Action to Protect Canadians from Iran War

Manitoba Premier Urges Canada to End Iran Conflict

WINNIPEG, Canada:
Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew called on Prime Minister Mark Carney to take action to stop the ongoing conflict in Iran, describing the war as “dumb” and unnecessary. Speaking at the federal NDP’s national convention on Friday, Kinew emphasized that no Canadian should be put at risk due to the U.S.-Israel military strikes.

Letter to the Prime Minister

In a letter to the prime minister, Kinew stated that the war has caused thousands of deaths in the Middle East and widespread economic hardship in Canada. “It is causing a lot of suffering overseas and economic pain to working people here in Canada and across North America,” he said.

Kinew criticized American President Donald Trump for calling on NATO to provide military support to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran seized in retaliation for U.S.-Israel actions. The strait is a critical passage for about 20% of the world’s oil and global liquefied natural gas, and its closure has led to soaring energy prices.

Defense of Canadian Values

The premier argued that Canada should act in line with its tradition of promoting human rights. “Not a single Canadian should ever be put in harm’s way to defend Donald Trump’s foolish Iranian war,” he said. Kinew added that no American child from working- or middle-class families should be sent to fight either, asserting that the wealthy elite should bear responsibility for the conflict.
