German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called on Israel to reduce military escalation in southern Lebanon and support ongoing diplomatic initiatives linked to the emerging US-Iran agreement.
Speaking after the G7 summit in France, Merz said discussions among global leaders focused on rising tensions in Lebanon and broader efforts to stabilize the Middle East. He noted that continued Israeli military operations risk worsening regional instability despite international appeals for restraint.
Merz emphasized that while Israel’s security concerns are recognized, its actions should not contribute to destabilization in neighboring states. He said G7 members were aligned in urging de-escalation and an end to hostilities in Lebanon.
The chancellor also expressed support for diplomatic progress surrounding the US-Iran framework deal, encouraging Israel to engage constructively with peace efforts led by Washington.
He warned that prolonged conflict in the region could have wider consequences, including pressure on global energy markets and economic stability.
Merz concluded by stressing the urgency of ending the conflict, stating that Israel should play a constructive role in reducing tensions and supporting peace initiatives rather than escalating the situation further.
