Kremlin Warns Against Iran Conflict Expanding into Caspian Sea

Kremlin Warns Against Iran Conflict Spillover into Caspian Sea

ISTANBUL — March 24, 2026

The Kremlin warned Tuesday that Russia would view any spillover of the Iran conflict into the Caspian Sea “extremely negatively.”

Russian Response to Potential Spillover

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov made the remark during a press briefing when asked about Moscow’s stance on the Iran war affecting the Caspian region.

Peskov declined to confirm reports that Israel struck vessels allegedly transporting Russian weapons to Iran via the Caspian Sea. “We haven’t heard these reports and I have no information on this matter,” he said.

Israeli Strikes in the Caspian

On Thursday, Israel’s military reported that its air force carried out strikes on Wednesday targeting Iranian naval infrastructure in the Caspian Sea. The attacks reportedly hit a military port, several naval vessels equipped with air defense systems and anti-submarine missiles, and a central command headquarters managing Iranian naval operations in the area.

These strikes are the first in the Caspian since the start of the US-Israel joint offensive against Iran on February 28, which has killed approximately 1,300 people, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Regional Escalation

In retaliation, Iran has launched repeated drone and missile strikes against Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US forces. These actions have caused casualties, damaged infrastructure, and disrupted global markets and aviation.

The Russian Foreign Ministry condemned the Israeli strikes, calling them “reckless and irresponsible” and warning that they risk drawing Caspian states into the conflict. It urged an immediate halt to hostilities and emphasized the need for renewed political efforts to stabilize the Middle East.
