Medical Genetics Center Advances Care for Military Families Worldwide
A Global Hub for Genetic Testing
The Medical Genetics Center at Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi, plays a vital role in military healthcare by supporting 9.5 million beneficiaries worldwide. As the only genetics laboratory within the Department of Defense, the center provides centralized genetic testing and expert consultation to military medical facilities across the globe.
Through advanced diagnostics, the lab helps patients better understand their health and take informed steps to protect their well-being and that of their families.
Providing Answers at Critical Moments
By offering early and accurate genetic insights, the center helps reduce uncertainty for patients and their loved ones.
“When we conduct genetic testing, we often give families peace of mind,” said Lt. Col. Joel Hughes, a clinical and laboratory geneticist with the 359th Diagnostics and Therapeutics Squadron. “For instance, noninvasive prenatal testing allows us to screen a developing baby for possible conditions, giving families and medical teams time to plan and prepare.”
In addition to prenatal screening, the lab conducts whole genome sequencing, cancer screening, carrier testing, and karyotyping. These services help service members and families make informed medical decisions during important stages of life.
Supporting Readiness and Careers
Beyond family health, genetic testing also supports military readiness and career planning. Certain genetic conditions can affect an airman’s ability to perform physically demanding duties.
“Many of our referrals involve cardiac concerns,” explained Maj. Nicholas Singhmiller, a clinical and laboratory geneticist with the 359th DTS. “If a provider identifies a possible heart issue, we evaluate whether genetics play a role, especially when the airman’s job involves strenuous activity.”
By identifying or ruling out genetic risks, the lab helps airmen understand their medical status. Even when a condition leads to further evaluation, early detection reduces the risk of serious harm.
“Knowing early allows airmen to make informed career decisions,” Singhmiller added. “That knowledge often brings reassurance, even in difficult situations.”
Expertise Behind Every Test
The center’s effectiveness depends on its highly experienced team of geneticists, many of whom bring expertise from other medical specialties.
“Our geneticists have diverse clinical backgrounds,” said Lt. Col. Felecia Washington, deputy commander of the 359th DTS. “Dr. Hughes’s experience in internal medicine and Dr. Singhmiller’s background in pediatrics allow them to analyze medical histories more thoroughly and explain complex results clearly to patients.”
This multidisciplinary approach improves both diagnostic accuracy and patient communication.
Faster Results Through In-House Testing
While some specialized tests are sent to outside laboratories, the center completes most testing on site. This approach shortens processing time, reduces coordination delays, and delivers results more quickly to patients and providers.
By combining efficiency with expert care, the Medical Genetics Center continues to strengthen military healthcare.
Through its commitment to advanced testing and patient education, the center helps service members and their families make confident health decisions, contributing to a healthier and more resilient Department of Defense community.
