Millions of Syrian Children Remain Out of School Amid Funding Gaps, UNICEF Warns
GENEVA – Millions of children in Syria continue to face poverty, displacement, and interrupted education, despite signs of a fragile recovery, according to Muzoon Almellehan.
Speaking Friday during a press briefing in Geneva via video link, Almellehan highlighted both progress and ongoing challenges in Syrian communities.
Education Disruption Persists
Almellehan reported that at least 2.45 million children are currently out of school, and another 1.6 million are at risk of dropping out due to damaged schools, poverty, and displacement.
She emphasized that “without safety, children cannot learn. Without a school, there is no future.”
Displacement and Safety Threats
More than 4 million Syrians remain displaced outside camps, while an additional 1.35 million live in camps. Explosive remnants of war continue to pose serious dangers, with nearly 1,000 incidents recorded and hundreds of child casualties.
Call for Sustained International Support
Almellehan urged the international community to maintain funding for education, healthcare, and essential services. She warned that declining financial support threatens progress and undermines the recovery of vulnerable children.
She also emphasized that Syrian youth are eager to help rebuild their country but need opportunities and resources rather than temporary aid.
