McConnell Says Recovery Continues as Doctors Delay Senate Return

WASHINGTON: Republican Senator Mitch McConnell has announced that he will remain away from the Senate for the time being as he continues recovering from a recent fall and a mild case of pneumonia.

In a statement shared with Kentucky residents on Sunday, McConnell thanked supporters for their well wishes and provided an update on his health. He confirmed that extensive medical evaluations found no evidence of broken bones, a concussion, stroke, heart attack, tumors, or internal bleeding following the incident. However, he revealed that he briefly lost consciousness and required hospitalization.

The longtime Kentucky senator said he later developed a mild case of pneumonia while receiving treatment but is now continuing his recovery at a rehabilitation center, where he is working to regain his strength under medical supervision.

Following a series of diagnostic tests, McConnell said his physicians have advised him not to return to the Senate floor until they determine he is medically fit to resume voting and other legislative duties.

Despite his temporary absence from Capitol Hill, McConnell emphasized that he has remained actively engaged in his responsibilities. He said he continues to coordinate with his Senate staff and Kentucky offices to assist constituents while maintaining regular communication with fellow lawmakers on federal appropriations and preparations for the upcoming midterm elections.

McConnell reiterated his commitment to serving the remainder of his term, noting that although he has previously announced plans to retire when his Senate term concludes in January, he remains determined to fulfill his obligations before leaving office.

He concluded by expressing optimism about his recovery, saying he looks forward to returning to the Senate as soon as his doctors approve his return.
