Thousands of Moroccans gathered for solidarity protests on Friday to support Gaza, which has been enduring ongoing violence and human rights abuses by Israel for over a year. Organized by the Moroccan Commission for Advocating the Nation’s Causes, these demonstrations took place across multiple cities after Friday prayers.
The protests, which marked the 62nd consecutive week, were held under the slogan “Gaza is a Trust, Normalization is Betrayal.” Demonstrators condemned Israel’s continued attacks on Palestinian civilians and expressed frustration over the international community’s failure to halt these violations. Protesters chanted slogans such as “Moroccan Salute to Free Palestine,” “Palestine Belongs to the Free,” and “Normalization is a Stain of Shame.” Signs calling for solidarity with Gaza and Palestine were also prominently displayed.
In 2020, Morocco resumed diplomatic relations with Israel, becoming the fourth Arab nation to normalize ties following the UAE, Bahrain, and Sudan. This move has been heavily criticized by many who view it as a betrayal of the Palestinian cause.
Since October 2023, Israel’s attacks on Gaza have resulted in nearly 44,900 deaths, mostly women and children. The International Criminal Court recently issued arrest warrants for Israeli leaders over alleged war crimes in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions in the region.
