Canada Launches Massive Marine Protected Reserve

A large new marine conservation area is set to be established along the Central Coast of British Columbia, covering a region larger than Prince Edward Island.

The protected zone, named Mia-yaltwa Ha’lidzogm hoon, has been created through a partnership between six coastal First Nations along with the provincial and federal governments of Canada.

Officials estimate the reserve spans approximately 6,700 square kilometres and will be jointly managed by Parks Canada in collaboration with Indigenous communities and federal authorities.

The initiative is aimed at strengthening marine biodiversity protection while recognizing Indigenous stewardship of coastal ecosystems.

Authorities say the agreement marks a significant step in cooperative environmental governance, combining conservation efforts with Indigenous-led management of marine resources.
