Nine Killed in Tragic Plane Crash in Southern Brazil

A small plane crashed on Sunday morning in Gramado, a popular tourist town in southern Brazil, killing at least nine people. The Piper Cheyenne 400 turboprop aircraft plummeted into a commercial area, first striking a building’s chimney, then hitting the second floor of a house, and finally crashing onto a furniture store. An inn was also damaged in the fiery aftermath.

Cleber dos Santos Lima, director of the state’s Interior Police Department, confirmed the fatalities, stating there were no survivors. Although the exact number of passengers and crew has not been confirmed, authorities believe the plane was carrying 10 people.

In addition to the deaths, at least 15 people were hospitalized, most suffering from smoke inhalation due to the fire that broke out after the crash. The plane had taken off from the nearby tourist town of Canela and was en route to Gramado, which sees a surge of visitors, particularly during the festive Christmas season.
