A police officer in Cicero was shot and injured early Saturday morning after officers approached a car illegally double-parked on 35th Street and 61st Court. Around 12:45 a.m., the officers were fired upon, with one officer, a 29-year-old sergeant with five years of service, struck in the back. The officer was taken to Loyola Hospital in serious condition. Another officer was unharmed.
After the shooting, the officers called for backup, and two individuals were detained as they attempted to flee the scene. Cicero Police Superintendent Thomas Boyle emphasized the dangers officers face daily in protecting the community and vowed to hold those responsible accountable.
The shooting investigation is ongoing, with the West Suburban Major Crimes Task Force assisting. The incident follows recent calls for stricter penalties for crimes against law enforcement, including proposals for longer prison sentences and the death penalty for killing officers, sparked by the shooting death of Oak Park Police Officer Allan Reddins.
