Tragic Mapleton Crash Death Toll Rises Ahead of Children’s Funeral

Sixth Victim Dies After Tragic Mapleton, Ontario Crash as Community Gathers for Children’s Funeral

A sixth person has died following a devastating two-vehicle collision in Mapleton Township, Ontario, adding further tragedy to a crash that already claimed the lives of five children last week.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) confirmed that the driver of the SUV involved in the crash, a 42-year-old man from Brampton, died in hospital on Friday due to his injuries. He had been the lone occupant of the vehicle.

The fatal collision occurred on June 12 around 7:30 p.m., when a passenger van and an SUV collided in Mapleton Township, located approximately 35 kilometres northwest of Kitchener-Waterloo. The impact resulted in the deaths of five children aged four, six, eight, 10, and 12 years old, all of whom were passengers in the van.

Five other individuals, including adults and an infant, were also injured in the crash and remain under medical care, according to police.

The tragedy has deeply shaken the local community. On Saturday, a funeral service is being held for the five children of the Doerksen family — Peter, Helena, Sara, Maggie, and Susy — at a rural church near Elmira. Family members, friends, and community residents are expected to gather in mourning.

Police have issued a correction regarding earlier reports, clarifying that the SUV driver passed away on Friday, not earlier in the week as initially stated.

Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the collision and are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to assist in the ongoing investigation.

The crash has left the region in shock as authorities and residents continue to process one of the most heartbreaking incidents in recent memory.
