Pope Leo Celebrates Mass in Uruguay
Pope Leo XIV led a Mass in Paysandu, Uruguay, on Saturday as part of his first official tour of Latin America since becoming pontiff. He is also scheduled to undertake several engagements in the capital, Montevideo.
During the religious ceremony, Leo reflected on the region’s Christian heritage, particularly the history of faith in the Rio de la Plata area. He emphasized the importance of solidarity, social cooperation and community values.
Using familiar regional symbols, including the General Artigas International Bridge, palm trees and the traditional drink mate, the pope highlighted the need to establish meaningful connections and strengthen relationships among people.
The Mass took place on the second day of his three-day visit to Uruguay. The country is the first destination of his 12-day Latin American tour, which will also include Argentina and Peru.
After the ceremony in Paysandu, Leo is expected to travel to Montevideo, where he will meet vulnerable groups and education professionals in the Casavalle neighborhood. He will also participate in a prayer vigil at Centenario Stadium.
On Sunday, the pope is scheduled to hold another Mass in Florida before leaving for Argentina.
The visit is particularly significant as it represents the first papal journey to Uruguay since Pope John Paul II visited the country in 1988.
Uruguay is widely recognized for its secular social structure and the longstanding separation of religious institutions from the state. Nevertheless, the country is welcoming a pontiff who has deep connections with Latin America.
