Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his openness to meeting with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump during his annual news conference on Thursday. He stated that he was ready for talks at any time and would be willing to meet if Trump desired. While Putin acknowledged that he hadn’t had contact with Trump for over four years, he assured that they would have much to discuss should they meet.
When asked about the situation in Ukraine and whether Russia’s position had weakened, Putin confidently disagreed, claiming that Russia had become stronger over the past few years. He emphasized that Russia is no longer reliant on external influences and is thriving as a sovereign nation. With increased economic stability and a bolstered defense industry, Putin insisted that Russia is now able to make decisions based solely on its national interests.
Addressing a question about U.S. President Joe Biden’s decision to pardon his son on charges related to tax evasion and firearms offenses, Putin remarked that he did not blame Biden. Drawing a comparison to Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, who famously refused a prisoner exchange for his son during World War II, Putin described Biden’s decision as a human one, showcasing his personal rather than political side.
Putin’s comments reflect his belief in Russia’s growing strength and its resolve to pursue its interests independently, regardless of external pressures.
