No Decisions on Ukraine Without Ukrainians, Says Chancellor

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reaffirmed on Thursday that any potential peace deal for Ukraine must involve the country’s own input. Speaking in Brussels, he stressed that decisions cannot be made without the direct participation of Ukrainians. Scholz emphasized, “We must work together with Ukrainians to explore what’s possible, not over their heads.”

His comments came amid rising speculation about US President-elect Donald Trump’s intention to initiate talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in a bid to end the ongoing war in Ukraine. Scholz highlighted his recent meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other European leaders, where they discussed the prolonged conflict that has gripped Ukraine since 2022.

Scholz urged EU nations to intensify their support for Ukraine, especially with regards to air defense, artillery, and ammunition, to maintain the country’s sovereignty and independence. “We must ensure Ukraine remains strong and equipped to defend itself,” he stated.

The Chancellor also made it clear that any peace talks must be grounded in principles that safeguard Ukraine’s interests. He firmly rejected any decisions dictated by Moscow, stressing that the war must end without escalating into a broader conflict between Russia and NATO. “The killing must stop, and peace must be attainable,” Scholz concluded, emphasizing the need for a solution that prioritizes both Ukraine’s future and regional stability.
