Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani called Wednesday for the establishment of a regional collective security system, saying its absence is a major factor behind the instability facing the region.
Addressing the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, Al-Thani said tensions in the Gulf could be addressed through diplomacy. He urged the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and a return to negotiations to prevent further conflict and strengthen security across the region, including Iran.
The Qatari leader said his country has consistently supported resolving disputes through dialogue and negotiations, adding that this position remains unchanged following the recent wars in the region.
He warned that conflicts that remain unresolved become increasingly costly when lasting and fair solutions are not achieved.
Speaking about Gaza, Al-Thani described the situation there in extremely strong terms and said the international community could not claim to have a just international order while the Palestinian issue remained unresolved.
He also criticized Israeli military actions in the occupied West Bank, saying the escalation had extended beyond the territory and was affecting the security of neighboring countries.
Al-Thani further condemned Israeli attacks in Lebanon and Syria, arguing that Israel’s actions suggested it was attempting to exert control over countries across the region.
