US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Monday that Cuba has already reached a point of collapse, describing its economy and government as largely dysfunctional. His remarks came during an interview with Fox News.
Rubio argued that Cuba’s political and economic system has failed to deliver meaningful improvements for its people. He said the country needs a period of transition that would introduce greater political and economic freedoms.
He also highlighted the large number of Cubans leaving the island since 2021, presenting the migration as an indication of the country’s deep economic problems. Rubio said economic reforms by themselves would not be enough and argued that political changes would also be necessary.
According to Rubio, Cuba would need to pursue political and economic freedom together as part of a broader transition toward a functioning state. He added that Washington remains hopeful that Havana will choose a different direction.
