A bipartisan group of 31 US senators has called on the Trump administration to extend and redesignate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Ukrainians living in the United States as Russia’s war in Ukraine continues.
The lawmakers, led by Sen. Tammy Duckworth, sent a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin and Secretary of State Marco Rubio requesting an 18-month extension and redesignation before the current TPS designation expires on October 19.
The senators warned that ending the protection could leave thousands of Ukrainians at risk of being sent back to a country still experiencing fighting, civilian deaths and extensive damage to essential infrastructure.
Ukraine was first granted TPS designation in April 2022. The protection was later extended and redesignated, with the latest extension beginning in April 2025.
The lawmakers said about 101,000 Ukrainian TPS holders currently live in the US and contribute around $2.6 billion to the US economy each year, while paying approximately $716 million in annual taxes.
They argued that the ongoing war makes it unsafe for Ukrainian nationals to return and said current conditions clearly support maintaining their protected status.
