US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called on Mexico to intensify its efforts against illegal immigration, fentanyl trafficking and drug cartels during talks with Mexican Foreign Secretary Roberto Velasco in Washington on Wednesday.
According to State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott, Rubio urged Mexico to take decisive measures to curb unauthorized migration, prevent fentanyl and other illegal drugs from entering the United States, and dismantle cartels and foreign terrorist organizations. He also stressed the need to restrict these groups’ access to weapons.
The discussions reflect Washington’s continuing focus on border security, drug trafficking and organized crime. The US has repeatedly encouraged Mexico to strengthen measures against criminal networks involved in the production and distribution of illegal drugs.
Mexico remains an important US partner in addressing border security and organized crime. However, the State Department did not disclose further details about the meeting or specify the measures discussed.
