Russia Denounces New EU Sanctions as ‘Illegal’

Russia sharply criticized the European Union’s latest sanctions package, calling it “unlawful and illegal.” Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, condemned the new measures, arguing that they harm both Russian and foreign economic operators and public figures.

Zakharova warned that these sanctions, which target Moscow’s “shadow fleet,” pose a significant risk to global energy security and destabilize the world economy. She emphasized that Russia would assess the damage to its economic interests and respond with countermeasures against the EU’s “illegitimate” actions.

This 15th sanctions package, adopted by the EU on Monday, aims to prevent Russia from bypassing previous sanctions. The EU’s ongoing measures are a response to Russia’s war on Ukraine, now in its third year and well over 1,000 days old. Zakharova vowed that retaliation from Russia would follow, reinforcing Moscow’s stance against what it sees as unlawful European actions.
