SBCA Bail Sparks Building Collapse Uproar

Unrecorded Structure Probe Widens Karachi Scandal

Eight SBCA Officers Granted Bail Amid Karachi Building Collapse Scandal

A local court has granted bail to eight officers of the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) in connection with the deadly Karachi building collapse that killed multiple residents earlier this year.

Investigators say the officers allegedly allowed or ignored the construction of an unrecorded and unsafe structure, which eventually collapsed, trapping dozens and sparking public outrage.

“These officials were supposed to enforce safety laws, not turn a blind eye,” said a senior city official.

Furthermore, the case has uncovered a web of negligence, involving not just SBCA officers but also utility providers and oversight committees who failed to act despite clear violations.

Court documents reveal that no official records existed for the collapsed structure. However, water, electricity, and gas connections were still granted—raising serious questions about systemic corruption and collusion.

“This wasn’t just a failure — it was a coordinated lapse by multiple departments,” said an anti-corruption unit spokesperson.

In addition, the court ruled that while the officers are temporarily out on bail, they must cooperate with ongoing investigations or risk immediate re-arrest.

Citizens’ rights groups and housing safety advocates have condemned the decision, calling for stronger accountability and permanent reforms in urban construction oversight.

“Every life lost in that building was a result of corruption,” said a protester outside the courtroom.

Meanwhile, the Sindh government has pledged to launch an independent audit of all unregistered buildings across Karachi and review protocols for service connections.

Finally, this high-profile case continues to expose the dangerous loopholes in Pakistan’s urban development system—and the lives they cost.
