Sweden’s government has proposed new legislation to restrict the ability of rejected asylum seekers to reapply without first leaving the country. The bill, introduced by the centre-right coalition government, aims to curb what officials see as an incentive for individuals to stay illegally and reapply after four years, once the statute of limitations on deportation has passed. Migration Minister Johan Forssell stated that the vast majority of asylum requests—over 70%—are denied, and the new measure seeks to prevent individuals from “going underground” and gaming the system. This move aligns with the government’s tougher stance on immigration, a promise made during their 2022 campaign.
