The solstice is driven by Earth’s 23.4-degree tilt, which causes varying daylight lengths. During winter, the Northern Hemisphere tilts away from the Sun, leading to shorter days and longer nights. On this day, the Sun will appear at its lowest point in the sky, creating the briefest daylight hours. For example, New York will see just 9 hours and 15 seconds of daylight, while Los Angeles will enjoy a bit more at 9 hours and 53 minutes.
While the solstice marks the shortest day, the earliest sunset does not always occur on the same date. In New York, for instance, the earliest sunset was on December 8, but the solstice sunset will be four minutes later.
The Winter Solstice can fall on December 20, 21, or 22, depending on Earth’s orbit and the calendar. The rarest dates are December 20 and 23, with the next December 23 solstice not happening until 2303.
