Switzerland Criticizes US–Israel Strikes on Iran
BRUSSELS: Switzerland has criticized recent airstrikes carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran, saying the attacks violate international law.
Swiss Defense Minister Martin Pfister made the remarks in an interview with the newspaper SonntagsZeitung published on Sunday.
Minister Calls for End to Violence
Pfister said that both the US-Israeli airstrikes and Iran’s retaliatory actions breach international legal principles. Therefore, he urged all parties involved in the conflict to immediately stop the violence and protect civilians.
“The Americans and Israel attacked Iran from the air. In doing so, they—like Iran—have violated international law,” Pfister said.
Europe Faces Security Risks
Furthermore, the Swiss defense chief warned that the conflict could draw Europe into a wider crisis. According to him, the risks extend beyond direct military involvement.
He said Europe could face asymmetric threats, including possible terrorist attacks and a surge in refugees fleeing the conflict.
“There is a risk of terrorist attacks in Switzerland,” Pfister noted. “In addition, the war could trigger a wave of refugees that may also reach our country.”
Concerns Over National Defense
Although Pfister does not believe Switzerland faces a direct threat from Iranian long-range missiles, he said authorities cannot fully rule out the possibility of collateral damage.
He also acknowledged that Switzerland currently lacks sufficient systems to defend against long-range attacks.
Call for Broader Security Strategy
The minister stressed that national security requires more than military readiness alone. He highlighted the important roles played by police forces and intelligence agencies in protecting the country.
Pfister added that Switzerland may have underestimated global security threats in recent decades. In his view, the current conflict could force the country to reassess its defense and security policies.
Rising Tensions in the Middle East
Meanwhile, tensions in the Middle East have escalated sharply since the United States and Israel launched large-scale strikes on Iran on Feb. 28.
The attacks reportedly killed more than 1,200 people, including Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, senior military officials, and over 150 schoolgirls.
In response, Iran has launched missile and drone attacks targeting US bases, diplomatic facilities, and military personnel across the region, as well as several Israeli cities.
