Taiwan Bans Chinese App RedNote Over Fraud Concerns

RedNote Blocked for One Year

Taiwan has decided to block access to the popular Chinese social media app RedNote, also known as Xiaohongshu, for one year due to concerns over online shopping scams. The ban aims to protect users from fraudulent activities on the platform.

Fraud Cases and Financial Losses

The island’s Criminal Investigation Bureau reported detecting over 1,700 fraud cases involving RedNote since last year. The total financial losses from these scams exceeded NT$247 million ($7.9 million; £5.9 million), according to local media.

Impact on Users

RedNote is similar to TikTok and includes built-in shopping features. Taiwan’s internet service providers have been instructed to block the app, affecting at least three million domestic users. Authorities have stated that the move is a necessary step to safeguard consumers.

Both Xiaohongshu and Taiwanese officials have been contacted for comment.
