Top Canadian Prospect Out for Remainder of World Juniors

Canadian Defenseman Matthew Schaefer Out for Remainder of World Juniors

Canadian defenseman Matthew Schaefer has been ruled out for the remainder of the World Junior Hockey Championship after suffering an injury during Canada’s 3-2 shootout loss to Latvia. Schaefer, 17, was hurt early in the first period when he crashed into the net, seemingly injuring his left shoulder on the play.

The Stoney Creek, Ont., native had been a standout in Canada’s tournament opener, contributing a goal and an assist in their 4-0 win over Finland. Schaefer is highly regarded as a top NHL prospect for the 2025 draft, alongside forwards Porter Martone, James Hagens, and Michael Misa.

This season, Schaefer has been impressive in the Ontario Hockey League, tallying seven goals and 15 assists in 17 games for the Erie Otters. His absence is a significant blow to Team Canada’s defense as the tournament progresses.
