As a naturalized Canadian citizen originally from the U.S., I find President-elect Donald Trump’s recent comments about Canada becoming the 51st state deeply concerning. In response, I believe Canada should seriously consider leaving NATO, declaring its neutrality, and seeking security guarantees from non-NATO countries.
From the U.S. perspective, Canada is largely defenseless. If the U.S. ever decided to annex Canada, there is little we could do to prevent it. At the very least, Canada would need a reliable source of weapons to defend itself or mount resistance in the face of U.S. occupation.
U.S. history reveals a consistent pattern: power and force are what drive the country. Diplomatic agreements, treaties, and promises often carry little weight. Unfortunately, the Canadian elite, who prioritize their own wealth and power over democratic values, might even welcome the U.S. presence. They would see U.S. military occupation as a way to suppress opposition and maintain control, much like U.S.-backed regimes do in other parts of the world.
Trump’s comment, although presented as a joke, should not be taken lightly. It signals a troubling shift in U.S. attitudes toward Canada, and Canada’s response should be to exit NATO immediately to safeguard its sovereignty and future.
