After Donald Trump’s unexpected 2016 victory, liberals rallied in massive protests, forming activist groups that fought his policies, such as attempts to overturn the Affordable Care Act. However, after Trump’s 2024 re-election, many Democrats are feeling deflated, with news channels like MSNBC seeing a drop in viewership, while conservative channels like Fox News surged.
Despite the frustration, Trump’s win has sparked a renewed interest in progressive activism. Thousands have joined anti-Trump groups, eager to challenge his second-term agenda, including mass deportations and cuts to federal departments. Many resistance organizations, built during the 2016-2017 movements, are already prepared with the infrastructure to mobilize when necessary.
While some activists are burnt out, others are ready to engage again. For example, 11,000 people attended a call from Indivisible, and over 7,000 individuals have volunteered to run for office through Run for Something since Trump’s re-election. Despite initial resignation, activists remain determined, with groups offering both social activities and plans for future political actions.
Resistance strategies have evolved, with plans to influence state laws and support candidates for the 2026 elections. Many activists are preparing for action as Trump’s administration begins to take shape. Though the mood is somber for now, activists are gearing up for a fight, knowing that the struggle is far from over.
