U.S. Reaffirms Support for Israel Amid Hezbollah Rocket Attacks

Over the weekend, U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III reaffirmed America’s support for Israel’s right to self-defense following a series of rocket attacks launched by Lebanese Hezbollah into northern Israel. Austin conveyed this commitment during two separate phone calls with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, held on Saturday and Sunday evening, according to Pentagon Press Secretary Air Force Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder.

The first call on Saturday followed the initial rocket strikes by Hezbollah, and Austin’s Sunday call provided an update on the ongoing exchange of fire between Israel and the militant group. “During both calls, Secretary Austin reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to Israel’s right to defend itself, as Hezbollah extends its attacks deeper into Israel,” Ryder stated. Austin further emphasized the importance of pursuing a diplomatic resolution to the conflict and securing a cease-fire in Gaza, with the goal of allowing residents on both sides of the border to safely return to their homes.

Austin also reassured Gallant that U.S. forces remain ready to protect American personnel stationed in the region, should the need arise. When asked if the back-to-back calls indicated growing concern about the potential for a wider conflict, Ryder explained that Austin has been closely monitoring the situation since the October 7 attack on Israel, maintaining regular communication with Gallant as tensions continue to rise.

Ryder emphasized the importance of diplomatic efforts to avoid a further escalation of violence, reiterating Austin’s commitment to resolving the conflict through peaceful means and bringing hostages home safely.–News Desk
