European Nations Urge Immediate Action to End Gaza Humanitarian Crisis
Britain, France, and Germany have jointly called for an end to what they describe as a “humanitarian catastrophe” in Gaza, where ongoing conflict has pushed large parts of the population to the brink of starvation.
In a statement released Friday, the three European nations demanded that Israel immediately ease restrictions on aid deliveries. They urged Israel to allow the United Nations and humanitarian organizations to operate freely and prevent further deterioration of living conditions in the war-torn Palestinian territory.
“The civilian population must have immediate access to basic necessities such as food and water,” the statement read. “Denying essential humanitarian aid is unacceptable. Israel must meet its obligations under international humanitarian law.”
The warning comes as the UN World Food Programme reported that nearly one in three people in Gaza are going days without food. Humanitarian organizations have raised alarms about the growing risk of widespread famine following over 21 months of conflict.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also condemned the worsening crisis. He said Italy could not accept “carnage and famine” as conditions continue to decline in the region.
International concern is especially rising over the number of malnourished children. Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) reported that, during screenings at its clinics last week, around 25% of children and pregnant or breastfeeding women were suffering from malnutrition.
Calling the situation “desperate,” the UN food agency said the crisis in Gaza has reached “new and astonishing levels.”
