UK PM: Assad Regime’s Fall Should Be Welcomed

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer reiterated the UK’s commitment to supporting a peaceful transition in Syria following the fall of Bashar Assad’s regime. Speaking to lawmakers in the House of Commons, Starmer welcomed the regime’s collapse but cautioned that the path forward requires careful attention. He emphasized the UK’s contribution of £50 million ($63.56 million) in additional support for vulnerable Syrians during this critical period.

Starmer highlighted that the G7 leaders had collectively agreed that Syria’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity must be upheld throughout the transition. He stressed the importance of ensuring a political shift that leads to a unified, inclusive, and non-sectarian government that represents all Syrians.

In the wake of the regime’s downfall on December 8, Israel swiftly moved to capture the buffer zone in the occupied Golan Heights, marking a significant development in the region. Israel’s actions included airstrikes targeting military and strategic sites across Syria, further complicating the already volatile situation.

As the Syrian people face uncertainty, Starmer called for global efforts to ensure their safety, pointing to the need for a governance structure that respects international law and human rights. The collapse of Assad’s regime is seen as a crucial turning point, but the future of Syria hinges on careful, coordinated international support.
