LONDON – British lawmakers have unleashed a storm of criticism against tech magnate Elon Musk after his public call for the release of far-right figure Tommy Robinson, founder of the English Defense League (EDL).
Using his social media platform X on Thursday, Musk urged authorities to “free Tommy Robinson” and even demanded “a new election in Britain.” This statement, paired with Musk sharing a controversial documentary featuring Robinson, ignited widespread condemnation. Robinson is currently serving an 18-month prison sentence for violating a court order regarding false allegations against a Syrian schoolboy.
Labour MP Stella Creasy blasted Musk’s actions, calling them a threat to democratic values. “Musk’s endorsement of Robinson and Germany’s AfD shows he’s not just a danger to democracy but also tarnishes the reputation of those who cozy up to him, like Nigel Farage and Liz Truss,” Creasy told Politico.
Another Labour MP, speaking anonymously, labeled Musk’s comments as “dangerous,” warning that they could fan the flames of division during critical times. “Someone with his influence should unite, not sow hate,” the MP added.
Although Prime Minister Keir Starmer opted to remain silent, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz openly condemned Musk’s endorsement of the AfD, further escalating the controversy.
Musk’s remarks have cast a spotlight on his connections with UK figures. Former Prime Minister Liz Truss praised Musk’s governance ideas, while Nigel Farage hinted at potential financial backing from the billionaire. Musk’s growing influence continues to raise eyebrows and stir political tensions in the UK.
