Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced plans to revive diplomatic relations with Syria, signaling a strategic shift in Kyiv’s foreign policy. This declaration follows a landmark visit by Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha to Damascus last month, where discussions were held with Ahmed al-Sharaa, leader of Syria’s new administration.
The visit also extended to Beirut, where Sybiha met Lebanese officials to bolster ties. Zelenskyy, in a video briefing, emphasized the importance of rekindling alliances. “This year, we aim to add Syria to our circle of reliable partners, enhancing collaboration in international forums,” he stated.
The Ukrainian delegation’s efforts aim to double agricultural trade with Lebanon, already valued at $400 million, while also laying groundwork for expanded engagement across Africa. “Each new partnership is a door to economic and diplomatic growth,” Zelenskyy remarked, hinting at upcoming agreements with African nations.
Further underscoring the regional focus, Zelenskyy announced the launch of the “Grain from Ukraine” initiative, aimed at stabilizing Syria with the support of European and American partners. “Peace in the Middle East echoes as stability worldwide,” he added.
This rapprochement marks a turning point after Kyiv severed ties with Damascus in 2022, following Syria’s recognition of Donetsk and Luhansk’s independence. Now, Ukraine looks poised to reshape its global alliances, balancing diplomacy with economic foresight to foster stability and prosperity.
